Our Work: Empty Sky: New Jersey's September 11th Memorial

Liberty State Park, New Jersey, USA.Role + Responsibility: Designed by Jessica Jamroz and Frederic Schwartz, the Empty Sky Memorial design was shortlisted by a jury of professional peers and unanimously selected by the NJ 9/11 Memorial Foundation as the winning entry in an open international design competition. The memorial commemorates 749 people from the State of New Jersey who were killed during the September 11, 2001, attacks. As Memorial designer and Director of design and construction of the memorial, Jessica imagined and orchestrated all aspects of the memorial design and its construction from conception through fruition. The project has been honored by numerous awards (including, among others, the 2012 Associated General Construction of America Alliant Build America Award; 2012 Faith & Form Sacred Landscape Award; 2012 Global SEGD Design Honor Award; 2005 NY NOW AIA People’s Choice Award and 2004 New Jersey AIA Unbuilt Project Honor Award). The Memorial was dedicated on the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2011, with six former Governors and then current Governor Chris Christie. The memorial went through three phases of construction over 5 years with a total construction budget of $12.6 million. The final and largest phase of construction—the construction of the Memorial Walls—went through approvals, shop drawings, fabrication, and erection (from bid to construction) in a short 9-month time period. Not only was construction kept on schedule (hard deadline of the 10th anniversary of 9/11), and the quality kept in line with the design vision, but ultimately the project incurred construction change orders less than 1% of the total construction budget.
